Qualico CAFE Series presents Ray Bonneville Acclaimed raconteur Ray Bonneville strips his bluesy Americana to its essentials and steeps it in the humid grooves of the South. His ninth release, At King Electric, delivers more than his trademark grit and groove. Rich guitar and harmonica lines resonate over spare but spunky rhythms, while Bonneville's deep, evocative voice confesses life's harsh realities. Whether performing solo or fronting a band, playing electric or acoustic guitar, Bonneville allows space between notes that adds potency to every chord, lick, and lyric. Often called a "song and groove man," he began writing his own music after two decades working as a studio musician, playing rowdy rooms with blues bands, and living hard. He's since released nine albums, won Canada's JUNO award and other prestigious honours, earned wide critical acclaim, and garnered an enthusiastic following in the U.S., Canada, and Europe. Friday, March 13, 2020 Yamaha Presents: Ari Hoenig Advance $25 / Door $30 * Doors: 6:00pm Performance: 8:30pm “He’s got Rhythm of every variety” ” trickles of rhythm seeping into all the cracks and at regular intervals he changes the rhythm, pouring it out or stoppering it, turning its emphasis around, subdividing or refocusing it and making it follow the melody.” – Ben Ratliff, The New York Times “Ari Hoenig is one of the most maniacally obsessive, spasmodic and musical drummers in jazz.” – Jazz Times “Expansive technique, propulsive time and deep musicality” “his style is characterized by a crisp attack and quick attentive reflexes.” – Nate Chinen, The New York Times “Ari Hoenig is a Magician!” – Batteur Magazine “Ari Hoenig, a disconcerting phenomenon of the drums.” – Jazzman Magazine “Postbop daredevil Ari Hoenig turns jazz drumming into a thrilling high-wire act.” – Time Out New York Ari Hoenig has a slightly compulsive relationship with his drum set. He doesn’t find the groove and cruise, or at least not for long: he looks for ways to irrigate his band’s music, to get trickles of rhythm seeping into all the cracks. And at regular intervals he changes the rhythm, pouring it out or stoppering it, turning its emphasis around, subdividing or refocusing it and making it follow the melody. Ari’s latest release, Conner’s Days, came out on the Fresh Sound label in May 2019 and it features his current trio of Nitai Hershkovits and Or Bareket. You can hear the man in this acclaimed trio at Hugh’s Room Live for the first time during Drum Week 2020. It will not be new to miss, folks, and if you don’t believe us, simply read through a few of his glowing accolades above. Tickets available right now.
