The web site you hold in your hand was founded on Nov. 17, 2009, Gordon Lightfoot’s 71st birthday. Its original visionaries were Andy Frank and David Newland, along with Meghan Sheffield, Trevor Mills and Candace Shaw. The site pioneered the streaming of the Canadian Folk Music Awards, created 45 episodes of a video interview and performance series called the Woodshed Sessions, and, for a time, hosted a streaming web radio station. It also featured the work of more than 50 writers and countless Canadian musicians.
The site slowly fizzled out between about 2012 and 2015, due in part to Andy’s struggle with cancer at the time. It lay dormant for more than two years.
In May of 2017, it was purchased by Heather Kitching, a long-time independent roots publicist and former national sales and marketing coordinator with Festival Distribution and Jericho Beach Music. She sought to revive the site with the support of the roots community itself.
On Apr. 3, 2018, with the backing of more than 25 record labels, promoters, publicists, artists and fans, Roots Music Canada relaunched.
Thank you everyone for your support so far.
