Death Cab for Cutie’s Zac Rae teams up with singer-songwriter Nesua for debut single

Death Cab for Cutie keyboardist Zac Rae has teamed up with a singer-songwriter named Nesua for a new single called “Swim” from Nesua’s forthcoming debut album.

There isn’t a lot I can tell you about Nesua. But the song, with its references to “a war that’s raging inside of me” is said to express “the inner conflict that many of us feel as we witness the environmental degradation that we have caused to the planet.”

The song uses metaphors of swimming, sinking, reaching, and reeling to convey the longing for peace, healing, and harmony with the natural world, as well as the guilt, anger, fear, and doubt that prevent us from achieving our spiritual goals.

It’s not hard to hear the Death Cab influence in the dreamy production values on this single, which features what sounds like jangly electric guitar put through some fancy effects,

But here, the electronics serve to create a a contemporary indie folk soundscape rather than a pop-rock one.

Nesua’s debut album is titled For All of Those Who Sojourn But Can Not Remain.

It’s slated for release on April 12.
