There was lots of exciting news out of Los Angeles Sunday night as Allison Russell won her first ever Grammy for “Eve Was Black” off her sophomore solo album The Returner — the title of which was inspired by Joni Mitchell and her many come-backs.
So it seems fitting that the other Canadian to win a roots Grammy on Sunday night was Joni herself.
She won the award for Joni Mitchell at Newport [Live], which captures her triumphant comeback performance at the Newport Folk Festival in 2022, featuring Brandi Carlile, Wynonna Judd, Marcus Mumford, and yes, Allison Russell.
She beat out fellow-Canadian Rufus Wainwright for the prize.
This is Joni’s 10th Grammy, not including the Lifetime Achievement Award she received in 2002.
Joni also performed on Sunday night’s Grammy telecast for the first time in her career.
