3 new discoveries from the recent Indigenous Music Countdown debuts

Guitar in Woods

As we’re fond of saying here at Roots Music Canada, we keep tabs on the new releases so you don’t have to.

One place we often go looking for new discoveries is the Indigenous Music Countdown. The show airs across Canada on NCI, SiriusXM Satellite Radio, ELMT-FM and other outlets, and the list is published every Saturday at http://www.indigenousmusiccountdown.com

Here are some tracks we’ve heard there recently that stood out for us.

Victoria Gwendoline – “Daisies in the Ditches”

Victoria Gwendoline, aka, Victoria Turko, is a Manitoba-based Métis artist who isn’t limiting herself to one discipline. She starred in the 2022 movie Vandits and appeared in an episode of CTV’s Acting Good and three episodes of D Dot H. But if this song is any indication, Victoria also stands to do extremely well in music, because she has an impressive singing voice, some solid songwriting chops and a very likable contemporary folk-pop sound.

Graeme Jonez – “The Flood”

This single from what Graeme considers to be his professional debut album, feels like it was heavily influenced by Dylan’s “Subterranean Homesick Blues” only with a bit more of a twang. And what’s not to like about that? The Toronto-based Anishinaabe artist told Say magazine that he draws on Delta Blues, dark folk and murder ballads for inspiration, and one of the songs on the album is set during a futuristic zombie apocalypse. I like this guy already.

Brettyn Rose – “Should’ve Been You”

Brettyn is an emerging contemporary country artist from Dewinton, AB, who was nominated for a Rising Star Award at the Country Music Alberta Awards in 2021. She’s seen some airplay on commercial country radio and been spotlighted on SiriusXM’s Indigiverse. She’s also been gigging around Alberta at the Big Valley Jamboree, the Canadian Finals Rodeo, and the aforementioned Country Music Alberta Awards. If you’ve got a place in your heart for commercial country pop, give her a listen!
