Here at Roots Music Canada, we listen to the new music so you don’t have to — then we let you know what we think is worth putting on your playlist.
This fall, there have been SO many great releases that even WE are having trouble keeping up!
Here are three more songs we think you’ll love. We encourage you to take 10 minutes and give them a listen.
Rose Cousins, Jill Barber, Jenn Grant – ‘Dark Angel’
Last spring, Jill Barber and Jenn Grant were backstage at the Blue Rodeo concert in Vancouver when Jim Cuddy turned to them and suggested that they should form a trio alongside Rose Cousins. Fast forward to this September and the trio has released a harmonically haunting cover of “Dark Angel” from the Blue Rodeo album Five Days In July — 30 years after the song’s original release. Rose credits the original “Dark Angel” as a top song from her, “teen emotional world,” and this passion for the original track is clear from the care with which the trio has approached the cover.
Donovan Woods – ‘I’m Around’
Donovan Woods’ new single “I’m Around” is a song about a breakup sung in Donovan’s deeply personal, relatable style. The lyrics are as beautiful as they are sad, a staple in the Donovan Woods’ introspective and personal songwriting playbook. The single is off of Donovan’s recent album Big Hurt Boy, a six-song exploration of how our failures – and fixation on them – can shape and enlighten us.
AV and The Inner City – ‘Nobody Is You’
Canadian blues-soul artist Ann Vriend, also known as AV, has launched an all-female soul and gospel-inspired vocal group called the Inner City, and this is their first release as a group, “Nobody Is You.” The song is about lost love, with Ann’s vocals being supported powerfully by a talented and diverse group that includes members of the Indigenous, Black, and LGBTQ+ communities.
