Honouring Gene MacLellan
Music PEI Week, a celebration of the great music coming from our tiniest province, kicks off next Saturday, January 14 with a much-anticipated concert, Just Biding My Time: A Tribute to Gene MacLellan.
The event, which is being recorded for later broadcast by CBC TV, will feature performances from singer-songwriter Catherine MacLellan, Gene’s daughter, as well as acclaimed performers Lennie Gallant, Ron Hynes, folk-rock band Haunted Hearts, Meaghan Blanchard and more.
Gene MacLellan’s contribution to the Canadian songbook is legendary. He penned several top forty hits in the early seventies including Snowbird, Put Your Hand in the Hand, The Call and Bidin’ My Time. Seventeen years after his death, MacLellan’s reputation as a songwriter and generous neighbour generated a sold-out audience weeks before this concert in his honour.
“Gene MacLellan was a songwriter who experienced tremendous success and wrote from the heart,” says Music PEI Executive Director Rob Oakie. “Islanders are very proud Gene chose to call PEI home and this concert, which has been three years in the planning, is a unique celebration of his song writing by some of the East Coast’s most loved artists.”
