Dear Mother Maple: Carpe diem and carpe the mic

Mother Maple Dear Mother Maple:

I love song circles. But I get serious nerves when it comes around to me to lead. Can’t I just be the side-guy and pass my turn?

Bill Wyman Wannabe

Dear Bill:

There’s nothing wrong with being a sidewoman or sideman. Elvis had Scotty Moore and James Burton; Johnny Cash had Luther Perkins; Gordon Lightfoot had Red Shea.

But, my darling Bill, while standing stolidly by and propping someone up is a worthy thing to do, think of the song circle as an opportunity to try on a new persona. Imagine your favorite solo artist and take strength and inspiration from him or her.

Nobody will think LESS of you if you pass your turn. But someone might think MORE of you if you don’t.

Do you have a question for Mother Maple? She’d be tickled to help. Just ask, dears! Mother Maple’s home-made advice is also available on the Twitters.
