About

Roots Music Canada: Who are we, anyway?
(see also What is roots music?)

Roots Music Canada had an auspicious start. This blog was born on Gordon Lightfoot’s birthday, November 17 2009. We’ve grown rapidly, thanks to hard work and the faith of our fans, and we are already making an impressive impact on the Canadian music scene.

We operate as a partnership between Andy Frank, broadcaster and web video producer, and David Newland, musician and writer, aided by dozens of volunteer contributors from across the country.

Our website, www.rootsmusic.ca is the online hub for the folk and roots scene in Canada. Our dynamic, engaging blog features the best and most interesting stories from the scene, daily.

We also do interviews, reviews, and live-streamed events, including the 2010 Canadian Folk Music Awards from Winnipeg – watched by folk fans from across the country.

We recently launched The Woodshed Sessions, a regular video feature hosted for folk and roots music fans. Shot in our unique hand-built woodshed stage and webcast studio, The Woodshed Sessions features veterans of the folk scene and young performers from the dynamic roots scene sharing the tricks of the trade, thoughts from the road, and original songs in exclusive performances for our online audience.

Roots Music Canada is not just a blog: our dynamic social media presence is the secret to our success. Every day we reach thousands of fans —and their friends— via Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Vimeo, email newsletter, recommendations and word of mouth. We have nearly 4000 fans on Facebook, nearly 2500 on Twitter, and are becoming a household name for fans and musicians across Canada and around the world.

Roots Music Canada is supported by sponsorship and advertising. We’ve been grateful for the support of Borealis Records, The Winnipeg Folk Festival, True North Records, The Ottawa Folklore Centre, the Ontario Council of Folk Festivals, Hugh’s Room, Electro-Fi Records, our beloved muse and guardian angel Shelagh Rogers, and many other like-minded advertisers.

Please consider advertising with us, to support the great work we do.

We are in the business of serving the roots music community and Canadian culture at large.

We are Roots Music Canada, and we appreciate your support!

What a fantastic site.
It’s great to see such dedication to the roots music world.
“When you donate 8 million…They name the building after you!”
Hillarious.
Keep it coming.

Hey Roots Music Canada: Through a Maple Post “reminder” I am finally getting a visit in to your site. Great. Dynamic. I’ve also be-fanned you on Facebook as well.
Thanks for doing what you do.

Thank you so much for posting the video of Grit. It’s fabulous for those of us who couldn’t make it to OCFF this year to be able to see it.
