Stompin’ Tom Connors

We honour the passing of Tom Connors by republishing this interview by Steve Fruitman. This story was originally posted on February 9, 2011 by David Newland.

He’s a legend in country music, and practically the template for the independent Canadian artist.

With virtually no airplay from commercial radio, Stompin’ Tom Connors built a huge following of fiercely loyal fans the old fashioned way: by playing and writing songs that mattered to the ordinary people of this country.

Stompin’ Tom Connors turned 75 today, and he’s as feisty and thoughtful as ever.

Veteran radio host Steve Fruitman dedicated an entire episode of his show Back to the Sugar Camp to Stompin’ Tom on his special day, and was kind enough to share it with us here for your listening pleasure.

Their telephone conversation, recorded February 3 and broadcast February 9, is interspersed with favourite tracks from both Stompin’ Tom himself and many of his favourite artists.

Two of those artists – Doc Williams and Charlie Louvin – recently passed away, and among the many special moments in the interview are those in which Tom expresses his sadness at the loss of his mentors and peers.
