Jon Brooks – Three Major US Awards

King City Ontario’s Jon Brooks has had quite the year.

In September of 2009, he won the Canadian regional finals for the Mountain Stage Song Contest (West Virginia). In May 2010 , he was one of six winners in the Kerrville New Folk contest (Texas), a competition which in years past has featured the likes of Lyle Lovett, Steve Earle, and Lucinda Williams. And on June 24, 2010, as Roots Music Canada first announced on our Twitter and Facebook pages, Jon Brooks won in the Nashville-based  International Songwriting Competition (folk singer-songwriter category) for his song “Small”. There were 15,000 entries in that competition.

We caught up with Jon during the On the Canal Festival in Montreal Saturday, June 19. He was one of many outstanding performers on the bill, as was Montreal’s Rob Lutes. The two writers share a great deal in common, as you will learn in this short interview.
