2010 Summer Folk/Roots Series:

Montreal Sur le Canal June 19-20

We begin what we hope will be an exhaustive video series on the dozens of folk/roots festivals across Canada with a look at “On the Canal Festival / Folk sur le Canal” in Montreal.

Entering its third year, Matt Large, Dave Cool, Carl Comeau and many volunteers stage a weekend concert at McAuslan Brewing Inc.’s lovely outdoor patio and stage, which is situated right beside the Lachine Canal. In many ways, this is an unusual setting and arrangement. Entering the premises from an urban, industrial-zoned street in a working-class neighbourhood, revellers scale a gravel hill, go around the bend, and stumble into a park-like folk oasis. Moments later, a cool and delicious St. Ambroise beer in hand, they settle in for hours of world-class Canadian roots music.

in this clip, you’ll see and hear Peter Katz as he closes his set with a familiar singalong, and we speak with Festival guru, Matt Large. As a bonus, Peter Katz’s full performance of his most recent CD’s title track, First of the Last to Know is on our Facebook Fan Page – what an incredible performance!

Peter Katz was of course one of many to perform over the rainy weekend, including Craig Cardiff, Kathleen Edwards, Jon Brooks, Rob Lutes, and Old Man Luedecke. See who else played this year at the On The Canal Festival . Coming up next from this festival, an interview featuring two Kerrville Folk Song Contest winners – and finalists for the 2009 CFMA Songwriter of the Year award – Rob Lutes and Jon Brooks.
