Shakura S’Aida Live @ Revival

Toronto blues sensation Shakura S’Aida enjoyed a triumphant musical return to her hometown last week, one she described as “fun & frightening at the same time”. Armed with many of the players featured on her new CD Brown Sugar, including co-writer and guitar goddess Donna Grantis, Shakura strutted her sexy stuff on the elevated stage at a jam-packed Revival Bar on College Street. Roots Music Canada was there, and captured this unedited, single-camera version of Sweet Spot from a position on the back balcony.

Shakura appears to be one of those fabled Canadian acts whose star is rising due to recent recognition by non-Canadians: in 2008 she was the runner-up at the International Blues Challenge (IBC) in Memphis, and a year later, she struck a record deal in Germany which has since seen her tour Europe nine times.

She is also challenging the myth that commercial success – especially for women – is exclusively reserved for the young, or for the legends. Roots Music Canada celebrates her talent, accomplishment, sacrifice, perseverance, and inspiration.  You go, girl!
